Whether
or not to supplement the diet with vitamins and minerals a is continuously
debated topic. There is no regulation in the supplement industry and there
are some far out claims. Some health care pro's say that it is a waste of
time and money. Then from these same paradigms, patients are advised to
take pre-natal vits and cal/mag for stronger bones. Vitamins don't work
some of the time and then become a waste of money. The big picture
regarding supplementing is about "optimal" levels of tissue
saturation and nutrient reserve, not RDA's. I know of not one person who
has a perfect diet and zero stress. We make food intake a way too
complicated issue. I tell my patients to get out of boxes and cans and back
into the produce department. Simply switching from white bread products to
whole grain choices can have dramatic benefits. Supplementing the diet has
a positive effect on immune response, energy levels, recovery time and
quality from injury, and can be the best cosmetic you never put on your
face. Feel free to contact me at the clinic for answers to questions you
have on diet and how supplementation may or may not help. Dr. Rob Mabry
